Otoplasty surgery is one of the most life-changing cosmetic surgeries Dr. Nima performs at Eos Rejuvenation in Beverly Hills. Many people who choose to have this surgery do so because they have dealt with the unfortunate repercussions of their large or misshapen ears their entire lives. These patients can attest to the unfortunate fact that there’s nothing like large, protruding ears to give a playground bully ammunition.

When Dr. Nima meets with his prospective patients during their one-on-one otoplasty consultation, he’s often asked about the recovery process. More specifically, Beverly Hills patients want to know the best position to sleep in after their procedure. Because Dr. Nima believes in fully educating his patients and preparing them every step of the way, we want to take time to provide some specific recommendations to answer this question in this blog, so keep reading.

Otoplasty Explained

Otoplasty surgery is a cosmetic ear surgery that is performed to change the shape, size, or proportion of the ears. Many Beverly Hills men and women choose to have otoplasty because they are bothered by how far their ears protrude from their head, or because their ears were misshapen at birth or due to an injury.

How To Sleep After Otoplasty Surgery

Beverly Hills otoplasty patients can expect swelling from their procedure to last up to two weeks, with residual swelling possible for up to six weeks. When you wake up from your otoplasty surgery, you will have a compression headband around your ears. This headband should be worn at all times, even when you’re sleeping. Dr. Nima will remove this headband himself during one of your follow up appointments.

To protect your results, and limit discomfort or excessive swelling, otoplasty patients should follow these restrictions when sleeping:

  • Patients Should Sleep On Their Back
In the first week after otoplasty, and until Dr. Nima clears you to do differently, patients should be sure to sleep on their backs. Sleeping on your side could cause discomfort, increased swelling, and final results that are less than optimal.
  • Patients Should Sleep With Their Head Propped Up By Pillows
To protect your ears during your recovery from otoplasty, and to ensure you have optimal results, patients who choose to sleep in their bed should take care to do so with their head propped up with pillows. Place several pillows behind your head, and some to the sides of your head as well. This will provide elevation and prevent you from rolling over in the night. This sleeping position can reduce discomfort and resolve bruising and swelling much sooner to accelerate the healing process.
  • Patients Should Consider Sleeping In A Recliner
Patients who find the above-mentioned sleeping position too uncomfortable in their bed should consider sleeping in a recliner instead. This will allow your head to remain elevated and prevent too much movement as you sleep.
