Benefits Of Buccal Fat Removal

The buccal pad refers to a rounded mass of fat, located in the middle part of your cheek. The size of that buccal pad can directly impact the shape and proportion of your face. For those whose buccal pads are a little bit larger, it can sometimes result in a “baby face” look, or in a facial appearance that is simply too round or full.

If you are dissatisfied with your rounded or puffy cheeks, buccal fat removal may help you achieve the look you desire. This plastic surgical intervention reduces the width of your round face, essentially by sucking out some of the fat in your cheeks. Buccal fat removal can offer significant, lasting results and an improved facial contour.

Am I a Good Candidate?

The best way to determine whether you are a good candidate for buccal fat removal is by scheduling a consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Nima. He will review your medical history and ensure you are qualified for a safe, successful procedure.

Generally, the best candidates for buccal fat removal are in good health overall and have a healthy body weight but dislike the roundness or fullness of their cheeks.

Procedure Process Explained

Before your procedure begins, you will be properly sedated to minimize any pain or discomfort. You will usually receive localized anesthesia for buccal fat removal unless you have other plastic surgical procedures done simultaneously, in which case general anesthesia might be more appropriate.

Once you are sedated, Dr. Nima will make an incision inside your cheek. This incision placement means that any scarring you experience will be hidden. Dr. Nima will then apply pressure to the outside of the cheek, helping to expose the buccal fat pad through the incision site.

After getting clear access to the buccal fat pad, Dr. Nima will cut away and remove excess fat and tissue. In some cases, a vacuum, like those used in liposuction, will be used to remove the fat from the buccal pad.

Once he has properly shaped your cheeks, dissolvable stitches will be used to close the incision site.

What Is The Recovery Like?

As you recover from buccal fat removal, you will be advised to use a special mouthwash to prevent infection and stick with a liquid diet for the first few days. Some facial swelling and bruising can both be expected, but they should diminish within a few days.

The total timeline for recovery is usually around three weeks. It may take a few months to see the final results as your new cheeks settle into position.
