5 Things To Ask Your Facial Surgeon Regarding Rhinoplasty

Why You Should Choose Dr. Nima

Is Rhinoplasty Right For You?

Do you experience breathing trouble or have a deviated septum?
Do you feel unhappy about how your nose looks when you stand in front of a mirror?
If the answer is ‘Yes’ to either of those questions, you may be an ideal candidate.

Generally, people are looking for a more symmetrical nose when they opt for a nose job. If you’re looking for similar results, you must understand that everyone’s face is asymmetric to some extent – and it’s okay. Surgical results are rarely, if ever, 100% symmetric, but there is no such thing as a perfect nose. Dr. Nima will shape your nose for a perfectly natural appearance so that it will look as if you were born with it.

Rhinoplasty can fix the following features:

Nasal asymmetry

Enlarged, bulbous, drooping or hooked nasal tips

Large, wide or upturned nostrils

A disproportionate nose in relation to the face

Increased width of the nose at the bridge

Disproportionate size or position of the nostrils

Nasal profile with visible humps, lumps or depressions on the bridge

This young woman was interested in achieving more balance for her face. She did not like her droopy tip, nor did she like the fact that her nose was crooked on frontal view. She also had trouble breathing through her nose and had a deviated septum. After open rhinoplasty her nose looks more proportional, the tip is lifted, and is more narrowed from frontal view. Of note, she also had some cheek augmentation and lip augmentation in her after picture.

What are the benefits of Rhinoplasty?

While it is usually done to resolve a structural issue or for cosmetic purposes, people get a rhinoplasty for a variety of different reasons. These include:

Nose surgery creates a balance between the nose and other facial features for a younger, attractive appearance. It addresses a wide range of problems, including a crooked or misshapen nose, deviated septum, and an enlarged nasal tip and bridge. Asymmetries of the nose can also be addressed at the time of surgery.

At our practice in Beverly Hills rhinoplasties allow patients to increase or decrease the size of their nose as needed for a proportional and natural-looking outcome. It can also reshape the nostrils as needed to fit the new nose. Lastly, it can change the angle between the nose and lip for a more youthful look. An ethnic rhinoplasty procedure is designed to harmonize the nose with the rest of a patient’s face while still maintaining their ethnicity.

A nose job can significantly improve your confidence and self-esteem level. In fact, studies have shown that a rhinoplasty increases self-esteem, much like braces do. With a new look, you are more confident and smile even more. That smile is magnetic because it helps you connect with other people.

A nasal deformity can affect the appearance of the nose, cause breathing issues, and induce pain. A rhinoplasty allows you to fix a broken nose to save yourself the pain, discomfort, and self-consciousness for a more healthy life.

Nose surgery can make a huge difference for people with long-term and congenital breathing issues. Rhinoplasty surgery can open the nasal airways to improve the flow of air into and out of the nose.

More often than not, sinus problems result in constant congestion of the nose, severe headaches, and breathing difficulties. You can get rid of these issues with the rhinoplasty procedure. Dr. Nima is also a board-certified otolaryngologist and can examine your sinuses if you have repeated infections.

Whether you have clefts, lumps, masses, or underdeveloped areas of the nose, a rhinoplasty can help correct your problem areas and yield life-changing results.

If snoring is negatively impacting your sleep, rhinoplasty may help solve the problem. One of the causes of snoring is a restricted nasal passage. Opening the nose from the inside will improve airflow so that you can sleep comfortably with your mouth closed. If you have nasal obstruction, you typically have to open your mouth to breathe at night, leading to snoring, and frequent wakings that inhibit you from a restful night of sleep.

The Procedure

Rhinoplasty refers to the nose procedure that corrects the problem of a deviated septum or nose deformity. It literally means “changing the shape of the nose.” It is typically performed under general anesthesia.

While most incisions made are internal, a small external incision is sometimes used. When the incisions are hidden inside the nose, it is called a closed procedure. Dr. Nima typically prefers an open approach because it allows him to make the most precise changes to the nose that otherwise would not be seen in the closed approach.

Closed rhinoplasty is mostly done by feel and less using direct vision. The open approach is ideal for patients who want major changes to their nose, have nasal asymmetries, or need structural grafting to maintain their results for a lifetime. The downtime is very similar with both approaches, generally requiring 6-12 months before seeing your new, definitive look.

The incision is shaped in such a way that it becomes invisible long before the nose has fully healed. Dr. Nima uses 9 carefully placed, non-reactive sutures to close the incision so that it heals imperceptibly. It is his opinion that one cannot compare the results between open and closed rhinoplasty. He believes that the better results outweigh the use of an external incision.

In an open procedure, the surgeon makes an incision on the narrow tissue strip between the nostrils. Once the incision is made, Dr. Nima reshapes the bone and cartilage of the nose carefully without compromising the breathing function of the nose.

Our Advanced Technology

Eos Rejuvenation offers some of the most advanced surgical procedures in order to achieve optimal results and expedient recovery times. One example of this is the Piezosurgery® technique, wherein Dr. Nima uses an ultrasonic scalpel to gently cut and move the bone. This technique allows patients to have the procedure done without having to deal with the more traditional method of “bone breaking.” Many of our patients qualify for this less-invasive procedure. To learn more about the benefits of Piezosurgery, we welcome you to make an appointment with Dr. Nima, our board-certified Beverly Hills facial plastic surgeon.

Dr. Nima will make sure that you have complete knowledge of the procedure beforehand, and that you are perfectly comfortable throughout the entire experience.

What Is The Recovery From Rhinoplasty Like?

After the procedure, Dr. Nima will place internal splints, as well as an external cast to protect and support your nose during the recovery process. It is common for rhinoplasty patients to experience swelling for a few weeks. Some patients may not see the full results until a year after treatment. You can expect to see and feel gradual changes in your nose for the first year.

Rest as much as possible to heal. There may be swelling, bruising, pain.
Strength returning. Symptoms declined. Body has healed.
Ready to return to school or work.
Bruising and swelling will be mostly gone. Most will be comfortable returning to gym and social settings.
Swelling entirely or almost entirely gone. Clear idea of the results of procedure.

As far as recovery is concerned, plan to take off for up to two weeks. It takes about this long for all signs of surgery (swelling and bruising) to resolve. Try keeping your head elevated most of the time and avoid doing strenuous activities during the recovery. Apart from this, Dr. Nima will guide you if you need to take certain medications or do something specific for post-operative care during the healing period.

Please note that the initial recovery is quick, but healing from plastic surgery may continue for as long as two to three years. Your skin will have to shrink to the revised and new underlying framework, so it takes time. However, it doesn’t mean you can’t go out without people staring at your nose. After the initial recovery, you can get the splint removed at one week following surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rhinoplasty can help reduce nose size by removing bone, cartilage, and skin, and by reshaping nasal structures. It can also reduce the size and length of nasal tips that may be over-protruding or bulbous and reduce and/or narrow the size of noses that are too wide.

Patients who wish to reduce their nose length can have their septums and cartilage adjusted. For those who want their noses made narrower may involve sculpting and repositioning with piezosurgery. Those who wish to correct bulbous tips can have cartilage reshaped, repositioned and tightened to achieve a more defined tip.

The results take an average of 12 to 24 months. During the first week, patients may experience swelling and bruising around the eyes. In about 10-14 days, you can go out in public without anyone knowing you had surgery.

Though 12 months may seem like a long time before seeing the results, the wait will be worth it for those whose noses have been affecting their confidence their entire lives. Patients in Beverly Hills can prolong the results by protecting their skin from the sun and maintaining healthy lifestyles.

Open rhinoplasty is when the plastic surgeon makes a small incision in the columella, which is the vertical tissue located between the nostrils. It allows for easier access to nasal bone and cartilage and helps the surgeon perform a more precise procedure.

Closed rhinoplasty is when incisions are made inside the nose, so there is no visible scarring on the outside of the nose. It is usually ideal in cases where patients are undergoing minor changes to their nasal tips and bone structure.

An upturned nose is when the nose has a higher tip that causes it to look shorter, especially in profile. Genetics are the most common cause, though in some cases, it can be the unwanted side effect from a previous rhinoplasty surgery. Those who want to improve the appearance of an upturned nose can do so with a procedure that will add length to the nasal tip. This can be achieved using extended spreader grafts made from cartilage harvested from the patient’s body.

While Dr. Nima ensures that the procedure will be safe, comfortable, and effective for you, thanks to his extensive knowledge and experience, every surgical procedure does carry some degree of risk. However, for most people the risk of complications is minimal.
